Looking for a Job... BOUTIQUE JACQUES ON INTERVIEW ATTIRE

Several years ago, we were searching for a sales associate who understood the clothing needs of the business community. I met with a prospect. Despite his endearing personality; his presentation did not suit our demographic. Fifteen minutes into the interview he excused himself. He returned within the hour; his shoulder length hair gone, clean shaven and wearing a nice suit.

He realized he needed to dress the part to get the part. Looking after the clothing needs of our clientele required a professional, business look. He made a serious effort, impressed us and got the job.

As in every business situation, a job interview demands that you know your audience and dress for it. How do you know what the interviewer expects?

  • Check out the company website and get a feel for its culture.
  • Speak to the head hunter, placement councillor or the intermediary who arranged the interview.
  • Call HR or someone else in the company that can inform you of the expected interview etiquette.

At the end, if you are not certain of the expectations, err on the side of formality.

Never wear anything that detracts from you. You are the focus; not your clothing or any jewelry.
